Spen Valley Faith in Schools Trust (SVFIST) is a non-denominational charity (reg. #1109799) seeking to support and serve the schools within and around the Spen Valley area, showing and sharing God’s love.
In the Autumn of 1999, Roberttown Methodist Church closed its doors, but members used the money from the sale of the church to fund a schools worker for 3 years. In September 2004, the first Schools Worker was appointed to work primarily, but not exclusively, within the Spen Valley pyramid of schools; a total of 10 schools. In September 2013, the number of schools doubled as the Trust was granted more money from the North Kirklees and Morley (formerly Birstall and Spen) Methodist Circuit, following the closure and sale of Broomfield Methodist Church in Cleckheaton.
10 years on , SVFIST now works with 20 schools throughout Cleckheaton, Liversedge, Heckmondwike, Roberttown, Norristhorpe, Heckmondwike, Batley and Birstall. Yvonne Froud is the only paid employee of the Trust, but we rely on a large group of volunteers from local churches to help out in many ways. Yvonne visits each school during term-time and leads assemblies, participates in classroom studies and also holds special events in the schools such as Prayer Spaces. In addition we invite schools in the area to 2 "Rewind" events each year, where the story of Easter and Christmas are told in a fun way with activities, games and film clips to help the children think about the way God shows his love for us at these special times in the Christian calendar. In June each year a "Fast Forward" event helps children about to move to senior schools explore their feelings on such a big change in their lives.
